If you're looking for a new vehicle, you'll likely be in search of something that offers enough room to tote your family and all their gear. Hatchbacks are an attractive option for families on the go. But with so many options to choose from, how do you know which is best? We've compiled a list of 10 hatchbacks for your families, large and small.

First: why a hatchback?

With so many options on the market and the rise of SUVs and crossovers, some may think that hatchbacks are on the decline. But monthly sales charts show there's still a demand for the five-door vehicles. The modern hatchback is still popular, for a few reasons:

- Enough room to accommodate five passengers
- A boot that's big enough to carry your stuff
- Engine is economical, but also has power for heavier loads

To compile our list, we dug a little deeper. Though a comfy cabin is certainly important, we looked at available gadgets and handling (or better yet, a combination of all three). Lastly, we compared prices with available gadgets to come up with this list of hatchbacks.

1. The Audi A3

Audi is responsible for designing some of the most luxurious cars on the market. While we don't always equate a hatchback with luxury, Audi manages to deliver practicality and extravagance in a neat, pretty little package.

The A3 is immediately recognisable by its four-ring grille and headlamps, but take a peek inside the cabin and you'll see why it makes the top of the list. Top-of-the-line materials, smart design and cruising comfort all define the A3. A 5.8-inch screen that slides up from the dashboard keeps the whole family entertained on long trips.

Aside from gadgetry, the A3 delivers on practicality with its low emissions and turbocharged petrol and diesel engines.

2. The Volkswagen Golf

The Volkswagen Golf makes the list year after year thanks to its aesthetic and desirability. A Golf feels of high quality and is smooth, and the newest models are loaded with features. These Volkswagens come well-equipped, featuring gadgets such as Bluetooth and iPod connectivity. In the newer models, side curtain airbags come as standard.

Like the A3, the Golf delivers an impressive engine range. If you're looking for style and convenience at a reasonable price point, consider the Golf.

3. The Mazda3

Though the traditional four-door model may prove to be too impractical for families, the five-door hatchback is a winner. Mazda's SkyActiv technology now comes standard across the entire 3 range, ignoring the downsizing trend. Instead, engineers have fitted the 3 with naturally-aspirated engines, creating a car that's efficient as possible in every situation. This makes the Mazda3 an attractive hatchback for families who drive in a range of conditions.

4. BMW 1 Series

Here's another car from a premium brand that nears the top of the hatchback list. The BMW 1 Series features low emissions, low rolling resistance tyres and an efficient diesel engine. For all of its efficiencies, the 1 Series also delivers on style, with a high-quality interior and stunning exterior.

5. Vauxhall Astra

The Astra has always been near the top of the hatchback sales charts, and it's not hard to see why. It features a distinctive and athletic aesthetic and the interior has plenty of high quality plastic and leather trim. There's enough room on the inside for everyone to ride comfortably and the boot makes it ideal for a family.

6. Renault Megane

If you're looking for a blend of space, efficiency and comfort, look to the Megane. The newest model offers a wide selection of petrol or diesel-powered engines, while C-shaped LED running lights make the vehicle immediately recognisable on the road. Overall, the car provides a smooth ride at a convenient price.

7. Kia cee'd

Kia is often seen as a bargain brand, but the cee'd provides a competent ride - and isn't bad to look at either. While it may not be as fun to drive as some of the leaders on our list, it will get your family from place to place at a neat price.

8. Nissan Pulsar

If space is your number one priority, look to the Pulsar, as it offers almost more space than any other hatchback on the market. It's also affordable to run, but may lack some of the gadgetry of other makes on the market.

9. Ford Focus

The Focus is fun to drive, but it's at the lower end of the spectrum, space-wise. Plus, it has fewer standard options than some of the other models on the market. On the good side, it offers convenience and a smooth ride at a decent price.

10. SEAT Leon

Finally, consider the SEAT Leon for its nimble handling and good ride. If you're looking for gadgets, however, look elsewhere. If you pick a higher-end model, you're more likely to get a car that won't show its age.
