What's all this about?
It's a Renault Sport-fettled Twingo. It's called the GT.
Praise be! Hang on, wait... GT? Isn't that a 'mild' model?
Yes. If you look to the all-new Megane launched earlier this year, you'll spot there's a 205hp GT iteration that has Renault Sport input. But it's not a full-on RS model.
So there may be more in store for the Twingo, then?
Hopefully, yes.
Why? Do you not think the Twingo GT is enough?
It should prove to be entertaining in its own way. Making the most of the Twingo's rear-engined, rear-drive layout, Renault has taken the range-topping 0.9-litre three-cylinder TCe motor and pumped it up to 110hp and 170Nm (gains of 20hp and 35Nm), thanks to a revised air intake and modified engine mapping. The manual transmission's gearing has also been adapted to suit.
And how about the rest of the package?
Mechanically, firmer suspension, specific calibration of the ESP stability control and variable-rate steering are drafted in to cope with the increased power, while the lovely 17-inch wheels aren't just for show - with wider sports rubber on them, they should provide more grip. If you don't clock its bigger rims, then you can identify a Twingo GT by the signature orange paint of the car in the pictures (Lunar Grey, Diamond Black and Crystal White finishes also available), its spaced twin exhausts at the back and the additional air intakes on its rear flanks. Inside, orange trim details, Renault Sport-branded door sills, aluminium pedals and an alloy gear knob complete the look.
Excellent, it should prove to be entertaining. When can I drive one?
The Renault Twingo GT will be on sale in the UK this winter, although it will make its global debut on our shores at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in late June.
