What's all this then?
This is the new Audi A3, or perhaps we should say the mildly updated Audi A3, because if, just by looking at, you can spot the re-profiled radiator grille and new lights then frankly you're a bigger anorak than any of us. And we're quite the anoraks.
Underneath, Audi has made more profound changes to the A3. The suspension is 15mm lower as standard (or 25mm lower if you're buying an S line model) and there's a new engine option - the brilliant turbocharged 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol unit making 115hp. We've already sampled it in the A1 and it's a cracker - expect more of the same here.
What about the interior?
Inside, there's a new MMI infotainment system with a seven-inch screen and new menu graphics while you can optionally equip the instrument cluster with Audi's 'Virtual Cockpit' 12.3-inch TFT screen, complete with full-width satnav display and configurable graphics.
And safety tech?
The automatic emergency braking system has been updated to include better pedestrian detection, while if you spec the car with both the S tronic automatic dual-clutch transmission and active cruise control, the A3 will now creep and steer for you in heavy traffic at speeds of up to 40mph. There's also a cross-traffic alert to warn you of approaching cars when backing out of a parking space and the updated headlights can now be had with Matrix LED technology.
Anything else of note?
For those of you among the power-hungry, the S3 models get a power upgrade, bringing the 2.0 TFSI turbo petrol engine up to 310hp.
Sales start in May.
