2015-08-28: All-new Renault Mégane to debut in Frankfurt

What's all this about?

With the Frankfurt Motor Show right around the corner, Renault has decided to let us look at the exterior of the all-new, fourth-generation Mégane ahead of its full reveal in Germany.

Are you giving the design a thumbs up?

We'll reserve judgment. No doubt it's a striking machine, especially the light signatures front (C-section lamps cut into the bumper) and rear (big, wide clusters almost connect in the middle of the car, accentuating its width), but the unusual Renault 'face' - seen already on the Clio - has been drafted into action. That means a big 'Diamond' badge and some large grille apertures, and we don't think it's the most comfortable-looking car in the world. Although it's a long way from a Vel Satis or Avantime...

What else has changed?

The track widths front and rear are up, by 47- and 39mm respectively, while the car sits 25mm lower to the ground - that bodes well for the hot Renaultsport version. The wheelbase has also extended to the tune of 28mm, resulting in shorter overhangs on the MkIV Mégane.

You mentioned the RS, but there's a tasty-looking blue car in the pictures - what's that?

The Mégane GT, a warm rather than hot model, which will be available from launch. It benefits from a sporty front bumper with wider air intakes and a honeycomb grille, while it rolls on 18-inch alloys developed by Renaultsport. To that end, it boldly wears RS badging on the front, sides and back, the latter aspect also featuring twin-chromed tailpipes and a spoiler. The paint finish is Iron Blue, with Dark Metal highlights to big up its sportiness.

Can you tell me anything about the engines?

Not yet - but all details on drivetrains, running gear and interior spec/tech will be answered in Frankfurt, which begins on September 15. Renault has to get this one right: in 20 years and three generations, it has shifted 6.5 million Méganes.
