What's all this about?

Afzal Kahn has announced his latest automotive project: the Speed 7 is styled like a 1930s Grand Prix car and production is expected to start this year. It is purely for track use and designed to fit in at vintage, one-make race days.

What do we know about it?

Judging by the styling sketches the main source of inspiration was the 1938 Mercedes-Benz W154, right down to the checked pattern of the seat trim. The main difference is a wider cockpit to make space for a passenger seat. The interior design is inspired by old racing cars and aircraft; so there could be plenty of dials and gauges. While the looks are retro the materials should be bang up to date with construction in aluminium or carbon composite.

No mention has been made of engine choice but it seems fair to assume that Kahn won't try to recreate the W154's 3.0-litre, two-stage supercharged V12.

Kahn describes the Speed 7 as "ideal for companies or individuals looking to set up their own race team, don their driving goggles, gloves and helmet and get out on the circuit to recreate the feel of 1930s racing."

Each Speed 7 will carry a plaque listing the names of everyone involved in the build. Owners will also receive a book detailing each stage of the design and build. Kahn will also launch a range of period-style clothing and accessories under the Speed 7 brand.
