Wow, what a nice pencil sketch.
Yes, it is nice isn't it?
Have you been asked to appear on Cash In The Attic?
No, not quite. Actually this is the first official sketch of Audi's upcoming new all-electric SUV, which will probably be called the Q6. To be a little more precise, this is the concept version, which will be unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in a couple of weeks.
Now, the phrase game-changer gets bandied about a lot, but it may just be apposite for the Q6, as Audi is already claiming that this is a full-battery EV, with no range extender element, that can go for 310 miles between charges. That's a figure far in excess of anything any other electric car, save the Tesla Model S, can currently manage and is therefore potentially something of a tipping-point vehicle for the electric car.
Audi is clearly working hard to make sure this vision of useable range can be realised. It's developed a new design language called 'Aerosthetics', which, it says, combines "technical measures for reducing aerodynamic drag with creative design solutions." There are moving aero surfaces at the front to tweak the car's slipperiness as it drives, and the overall drag coefficient is 0.25, which Audi claims is a class best for the SUV segment.
The platform underneath is essentially the same MLB setup that's already been launched under the Audi Q7, and which will also be used for the next Volkswagen Touareg, Porsche Cayenne and the Bentley Bentyaga. The Q6 won't get the Q7's third row seating though, and as its name suggests it'll sit between the Q5 and Q7 in terms of size.
Audi says that the car's lithium-ion batteries are mounted low, in the centre of the car under the passenger compartment, which potentially gives the Q6 a very low centre of gravity and, therefore, potentially sharp handling.
The concept (and presumably then the production version) uses three electric motors - one on the front axle and two on the rear, which will be able to direct power to each rear wheel individually.
