What's this all about?
Mercedes-Benz is bringing a new mid-sized SUV to the UK, called the GLC, set to rival the likes of the Land Rover Discovery Sport, Audi Q5 and BMW X3.
Looks smart, what's under the bonnet?
At launch there are just four models to choose from, though we expect that to increase by 2016. The entry-level car is the GLC 220 d 4Matic, powered by Merc's trusty 2.1-litre turbodiesel producing 170hp and 400Nm of torque. Emissions are as low as 129g/km with combined economy of 56mpg. According to the data sheets we've been given it seems that the next model up the ladder, the GLC 250 d 4Matic, returns the same green figures from its uprated 2.1-litre engine. Thanks to 204hp and 500Nm of torque it can dispatch the 0-62mph time in 7.6 seconds (0.7 seconds quicker).
The two petrol models share a 211hp/350Nm turbocharged 2.0-litre engine, though the GLC 250 4Matic is conventional enough, while the GLC 350 e 4Matic adds plug-in hybrid capability thanks to a 114hp/340Nm electric motor integrated in the gearbox and a lithium-ion battery. Maximum system outputs are 327hp and 560Nm of torque, which explains the 0-62mph time of 5.9 seconds. It has an electric range of 21 miles on a full charge and the official emissions rating is just 60g/km.
Are they all 4Matic four-wheel drive?
Certainly initially, and all the models mentioned here come with automatic gearboxes - nine-speed units for all except the hybrid, which gets a seven-speed version.
Anything else of note?
There's something called an Off-Road Engineering package that furthers the GLC's off-road prowess with underbody protection, different bumpers and enhanced electronic control of the four-wheel drive and stability control systems. It comes with five disparate modes of operation too, including something called 'Rocking Assist', which is designed to help get the car out of a particularly sticky situation.
How much will it cost?
From under £35,000.
