What's all this about?
BMW has added an entry-level powerplant to the 2 Series Coupé range with the option of a 1.5-litre, three-cylinder petrol engine. The new engine is not the only addition to BMW's smallest coupé as the 220d is available with four-wheel drive and there is a new Luxury trim level.
What's the new engine?
From BMW's new family of three-cylinder units the 218i Coupé features the brand's TwinPower turbo system and has 136hp plus 220Nm of torque. Official performance figures are 0-62mph in 8.8 seconds with a top speed of 130mph. Combined cycle fuel economy is 52.3mpg with CO2 emissions of 125g/km. The 218i Coupé is priced from £22,355.
How about the Luxury trim level?
Costing £2,000 more than the equivalent 2 Series SE the Luxury models can be identified by extra chrome body trim and 18-inch alloy wheels. Inside it comes with fineline stream high-grade wood trim including an Oxide Silver accent strip. There is also a leather sports steering wheel and Dakota leather upholstery in a range of colours.
And all-wheel drive?
Customers can now order the 2 Series with four-wheel drive in the 220d xDrive Coupé, from £30,065. Available only with automatic transmission the xDrive is designed to provide optimum traction in all weathers and improve high-speed cornering. Acceleration from 0 to 62mph is improved over the two-wheel drive 220d Coupé by 0.6 seconds to 6.9 seconds according to BMW's figures, with a top speed of 139mph. Economy and emissions figures are 62.8mpg and 119g/km respectively.
