What's all this about?

You can now, for the first time in the 50-year-plus history of the Ford Mustang, order an official right-hand drive model here in the UK.

Superb, so how much will it cost me?

The Mustang range starts at £28,995 and rises to £38,495, neither of which are huge sums of money in the automotive world - this is tremendous news.

Could you expand a little on the range?

There are two body styles (fastback coupé and convertible), two transmissions (a manual or automatic, both of which have six speeds) and two engines - a 314hp, 2.3-litre, four-cylinder EcoBoost unit or the 418hp, 5.0-litre V8. While the former is impressive for its high specific output, for the authentic Mustang experience you're gonna want the V8. We think it's about here that someone trots out that old classic about 'there ain't no replacement for displacement'...

Presumably £28,995 gets me in a boggo 2.3 manual fastback?

Yes, it does, but that should still be a quick and nicely-equipped car. Adding an automatic gearbox adds £1,500 to the list price of any model, while the convertibles command a £4,000 premium over their equivalent fastback. The 5.0-litre cars start at an eminently reasonable £32,995.

Any word on fuel economy or CO2 emissions?

Ford is being coy on the former but has revealed the latter - the numbers range from anything between 179g/km (2.3 fastback manual) to 306g/km for the 5.0 convertible manual. That equates to £345 in year one and then £225 annually thereafter for the cleanest Mustang, and £1,090/£500 for the most polluting.

What about standard and optional equipment?

All UK Mustangs come with 19-inch wheels, a performance brake package, automatic HID Xenon headlamps, LED tail lights and a rear diffuser. Inside you'll find dual-zone climate control, a nine-speaker sound system and SYNC 2 voice control connectivity with an eight-inch colour touchscreen. Options include climate control seats, Lustre Nickel 19-inch alloys and ten exterior colours, such as Competition Orange and tri-coat Triple Yellow, exclusive Mustang hues.

I'm off to my local Ford dealer...

Whoa, whoa, whoa, hold your horses (forgive us)! Mustangs are only being sold through FordStores, which are also new. These sites are being rolled out through the country, but are mainly metropolitan at the moment. If you do find one and order your 'Stang, expect to be driving it around from late autumn.
