What's all this about?
McLaren has added a new level of optional upgrades to its armoury, creating a five-tier customisation ladder for 650S owners (and the 625C in Asia).
Is there a name for this new level?
Yes, McLaren Special Operations (MSO) has created the new 'MSO Defined' division. This is the first of the five tiers, offering an aerodynamic kit for the exterior of the 650S and various carbon fibre styling additions inside out. Among them are the extended side door blades seen on the limited edition MSO 650S punted out earlier this year, extended carbon fibre shift paddles within and a redesigned instrument cluster incorporating F1-style shift lights, something that track day enthusiasts have clamoured for. MSO Defined is essentially discreet styling mods.
What's above MSO Defined?
The levels we already know about - MSO Bespoke takes this styling theme and runs with it, offering an 'almost limitless level of customisation' to McLaren owners, including unique paint, leather and stitching colours, plus standalone upholstery and body alterations. MSO Limited handles special models, like the aforementioned MSO 650S and the 50th anniversary McLaren 50 12C and 12C Spider models of 2013. MSO Heritage looks after the older creations, such as the F1 and the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren. And MSO Programmes covers the P1 GTR Driver Programme, with each car built, maintained and prepared by MSO in advance of the exclusive track days held at worldwide Formula 1 circuits.
Is there a demand for modified Maccas, then?
According to Paul Mackenzie, the executive director of MSO, yes there is: "There is a strong desire for drivers to personalise their cars and I'm convinced that the introduction of MSO Defined line will prove popular amongst our customers. Every McLaren is unique but now, with more choice than ever before, we are enabling our customers to truly express themselves through their vehicles."
