Mercedes-Benz will replace the current CLK-Class Coupé with an all-new car based on the forthcoming E-Class saloon platform. The first details of the stylish new Coupé have been released ahead of a world debut at
next month's Geneva Motor Show.
Though the new two-door shares detailing with the E-Class saloon, its features are even more sculpted for a sportier appearance, yet it also manages to be an elegant design. Typical Mercedes coupé highlights include side glass with no B-pillar and a prominent three-pointed star forming part of the front grille. The new Coupé also shares aspects of its design with the current S-Class and despite the fitment of wide tyres, Mercedes incredibly claims that the E-Class Coupé is the 'world's most aerodynamically efficient series-production car', with a coefficient of drag figure of just 0.24.
That's not the only mention of efficiency in Merc's press release, as four of the five engines on offer are tagged 'BlueEfficiency'. The unit most deserving of that name is the four-cylinder turbodiesel that powers the E 250 CDI. Utilising high-pressure common rail technology, sophisticated piezo injectors and dual-stage turbocharging, this engine produces 201bhp and maximum torque of 369lb.ft, yet returns 53.3mpg on the combined cycle and CO
2 emissions of 139g/km.
A V6 turbodiesel is still available - in the E 350 CDI - with 228bhp and 398lb.ft of torque. The price you pay for this extra grunt is 41.5mpg and 179g/km, which is still respectable, especially given the more appealing engine note this model boasts.
Three petrol engines will be available, starting with two new direct-injection units. The E 250 CGI will be the entry-level model and though it boasts the same power output as the E 250 CDI, its torque figure is significantly down and combined economy is quoted as 40.3mpg. Buyers more interested in performance will be interested in the new V6-engined E 350 CGI - which feeds 288bhp to the rear wheels - and the top of the range E 500. The latter's V8 pushes out 383bhp.
Until proper AMG models arrive, the range will be divided into SE and Sport specifications. All versions receive a wealth of standard equipment, including advanced new safety technology such as Attention Assist, Pre-Safe and an Active Bonnet. The Sport model is differentiated from the SE variant by use of an AMG body styling kit and 18-inch, six-spoke alloys, while under the skin sports suspension with speed-sensitive steering and bigger front brakes are fitted as standard.
Prices and performance figures will be announced in due course, with sales tipped to start in June 2009.
