The new SEAT León is named after the Historic Castillian City in Northern Spain. An unusual name then, for an exciting new addition to the blossoming SEAT range. Alfa Romeo now have a serious rival to compete with in Europe. Making its world debut at the upcoming Frankfurt International Motor Show (from 14 - 26 September) the León is the first car in SEAT's production-car history with 180bhp, four-wheel-drive and a six-speed transmission. Quite a combination I think you will agree!
The new hatch is only 4.2m long, aiming it squarely at the Ford Focus end of the market, but, it's coupe-like styling ought to help carve itself a niche in the market. Personally, I think it is reminiscent of the (in)famous Alfasud. At least the SEAT should not rust..... Alfa Romeo's current answer is the 146 which has been updated recently, but is still a little behind the times in terms of dynamics. That car will be replaced soon however.
The León range will be available in four trim levels from launch in Europe. A choice of seven engines will range from the 68bhp 1.9 SDi to the new VW-derived unit, the potent 180bhp 1.8-litre 20V Turbo, the most powerful engine ever offered in a production SEAT which, in the Sport model, is mated to a six-speed manual transmission. The León also becomes the fastest ever SEAT with a top speed of 142mph (manufacturer's figures).
The diesel range includes a 90bhp 1.9 Tdi, as well as the 110bhp engine. There is also a choice of a 75bhp 1.4 16V unit , a 100bhp 1.6 and a 125bhp 1.8 20V to complete the range of petrol engines. Not a bad choice at all. The León 4 version will also soon be available, with an intelligent electronic four wheel traction system, shared with the VW Golf 4 motion. This car may well spawn the next generation of SEAT WRC contenders.
