NEWcars: 2000 Kia MPV, 02 October 1999 Specifications
The Kia Sedona is the latest addition to the growing MPV market
(27 September 1999 - Kia UK press release)

A full-size seven seater MPV is within the budgets of many new car customers for the first time. The new Kia Sedona range is priced at only 13,995 on the road for the budget-priced 2.5-litre V6 petrol or 2.9-litre turbodiesel S model and rises to just 18,495 for the top-of-the-range Exec, with standard leather upholstery and a CD player with eight speakers. All Kia cars benefit from a 3 year/60,000 mile warranty with 3 years roadside assistance including cover in Europe.

The Kia Sedona offers outstanding space, comfort and versatility. The specification of the Sedona is exceptional with power throughout the range being provided by either an advanced 24-valve Quad Cam 2.5-litre V6 petrol engine or a 16-valve 2.9-litre Direct Injection intercooled turbodiesel engine. Unusually, both manual and automatic versions of both engines are available from day one across all four trim levels (S, SE, GSX and Exec).

All models feature driver and passenger air bags, two sliding doors providing easy access to the rear and seven seats including an eight-way adjustable drivers seat (electrically-adjustable and with air cushion lumbar adjustment on GSX & Exec). The two captains chairs in the second row can face to the front or rear and slide forward or aft. The first two rows of seats have armrests. There are six height adjustable head restraints. For additional comfort ventilation ducts and a three speed rear heater fan can be adjusted from the rear while rear passengers also benefit from a six speaker RDS radio/cassette (except Exec with eight speakers and integral radio cassette/CD player).

The standard specification also includes electrically-adjustable and heated door mirrors, front electric windows, variable delay intermittent wipers, a total of eight courtesy lamps with separate control for the rear and the convenience of a lamp delay system. In keeping with the versatility expected of an MPV there are 11 cup holders as well as various strategically-placed storage bins.

The generous proportions of the Kia Sedona belie an aerodynamic shape with a drag coefficient of just 0.32. This aerodynamic efficiency, combined with the specification of engines which are comfortably up to the task of propelling a vehicle that is 4890mm long, 1900mm wide and 1790mm high (with standard roof rails), can be seen in the frugal extra-urban fuel consumption figure of 41.5mpg for the turbodiesel and 31.7mpg for the V6 petrol. A creditable combined fuel consumption figure of 34.0mpg for the turbodiesel gives a touring range of over 560 miles.

The interior offers maximum versatility and spaciousness without the chore of having to take seats out. The walk-through nature of the internal layout begins with the gear or selector lever being mounted into the centre console providing sufficient space to move between the two front seats into the rear of the vehicle. Having sliding doors either side and two individual captains chairs in the second row improves access to the bench seat in the rear.

The two captains chairs can be turned 180 degrees so they face passengers seated in the rear seat. Lap belts are provided for this purpose in addition to the lap and diagonal belts provided for forward travel. The individual second row seats fold forward to provide work tops and along with the rear seat can slide forward to increase/decrease space forward and aft. In order to maximise luggage space the third seat can be folded vertically and slid forward. The rear seat also reclines and when slid forward will recline completely to form a bed.

The modern chassis and suspension set-up along with a wide track and 2.91 metre wheelbase provide a comfortable ride on long journeys. Chassis tuning was carried out in Europe to ensure that it meets the demands of European road conditions.

The engines have been carefully selected to meet the demands of an MPV, able to carry 7-people and their luggage in comfort for long distances. The Sedona is the only MPV with a V6 petrol engine in the entry model, while the 2.9-litre turbodiesel is the most powerful turbodiesel available in an MPV.

The safety package includes full-size dual front air bags, while a four-channel ABS system is fitted on the SX/GSX and Exec models. A side-impact protection system is fitted in all the doors.

The on the road prices for the Kia Sedona line-up are as follows:

  • Sedona S: 13,995
  • Sedona S auto: 14,845
  • Sedona SX: 15,995
  • Sedona SX auto: 16,845
  • Sedona GSX: 16,995
  • Sedona GSX auto: 17,845
  • Sedona Exec: 18,495
  • Sedona Exec auto: 19,345

All models are available with two engine options: V6 DOHC 24-valve Quad Cam 2497cc petrol engine delivering peak power of 162bhp @ 6500rpm and peak torque of 222Nm @ 4100rpm OR Direct Injection, turbocharged and intercooled 4 cylinder DOHC 16-valve 2902cc diesel engine delivering peak power of 125bhp @ 3,600rpm and peak torque of 338Nm @ 1950rpm.
