Rounds 23/24 | Rounds 25/26 - Silverstone 19 September 1999 |
Laurent Aiello showed his mettle as a touring car superstar as he picked up both pole positions, putting himself within one point of the title. Feature pole was one of Aiello's typically masterful and confident laps, but Lady Luck came into play for the one shot show down. Leslie, who had only managed fourth in the feature qualifying, was caught out in a shower for his quick lap, but by the time Aiello came out, three cars later, the track had dried, leaving the two protagonists separated by the complete grid. The Thompson/Rydell battle hung in the balance, with Rydell alongside poleman Aiello for the feature, four places in front of Thompson, and Thompson, third in the sprint qualifying, three places in front of Rydell. Plato was the other front row man in the sprint race. |

Still, the Scotsman's chances seemed remote, but as the grid started on the parade lap Plato's Laguna failed to start, so the front row was now Thompson and Neal. When the lights turned green Rydell made a stunning getaway to pass Muller and Neal, and gamely keeping his speed through Copse. Thereafter it was obvious that Rydell wasn't really threatened as Neal, sensing the chance of a second victory, put Thompson under considerable pressure before the first of several spins. The rain became much heavier and the cars were beginning to aquaplane severely on the straights. Leslie had made very little progress at the rear of the field and after the safety car was called out the result was declared at 8 laps: Aiello was champion. |
The
feature race was John Cleland's last race, and consequently there was a
stirling send off with a piper and a guard of honour as he took to his
chariot on the grid. As the lights turned, Rydell again made a good start.
Aiello, attempting to hold him off, simply went too fast and lost the back
end. Rydell's apparent masterly demonstration at a soaked Silverstone must
have given him great satisfaction despite being the outgoing champion.
As Rydell hared off into the distance there was bedlam behind him. Boullion
and Kox came together and Thompson came off during a four car scuffle at
Priory. Plato eased Leslie out and held second place up to the pit stops,
but had a panel bashing from Menu as he came out of the pits, ending his
race. The safety car then led Rydell, Leslie, Reid, Muller, Neal, Radermecker
and Hoy before 8 final laps of classic BTCC-style dicing. And so the season
ended. All-in-all it was a slight anti-climax as there was never a realistic
chance of anybody other than Aiello lifting the title after David Leslie's
failure to convert his poles at Oulton: but don't worry David, there's
always next year.....
